Fitness vs. Fatness (Part 6): I Was a (??)-Pound Weakling

A famous magazine ad for the Charles Atlas body building course used a campaign beginning with a 98-pound weakling enduring “the insult” of having a beach bully kick sand in his face in the presence of his girlfriend. (One of Atlas’s ads in fact appears to be lampooned in a shot of Goofy Gymnastics, reviewed last week.) This week, three cartoons take off from similar situations, leading characters to attempt to prove their muscular abilities against bullies for the love of a girl. And no, none of them feature Popeye! The scales are balanced with three more episodes of untamed...

Interest in homeschooling was already peaking before the pandemic, but the past year has seen demand for virtual schools skyrocket

Parents who would never have previously considered online schooling are taking the leap and the concept is gaining traction.  Hugh Viney (below), headmaster of Minerva’s Virtual Academy, told me that he’s now getting upwards of 50 parental enquiries a week and reckons his online school will be four times its current size come September.  But for many parents, leaving conventional education to embrace schooling online is a massive step and there are some big hurdles to overcome first. Gluten Free Living – 2021

Herb Roasted Chicken and Asparagus is one of those lovely one-dish suppers that I love to make. Making everything in one casserole is so easy. You toss in the ingredients, sometimes pour a sauce or vinaigrette over top, and then bake. Simple, easy, quick. Follow Me On Instagram! And, it leaves plenty of time while the casserole is baking to attend to other things around the home. This one consists of chicken, asparagus, tomatoes, red potatoes, carrots, halved corn-on-the-cob, mushrooms, leeks, onions and garlic in a tasty vinaigrette. My inspiration for this recipe always goes back to the very first recipe...

Viola Davis in McQueen at the 2021 Oscars: incredible and unique?

Viola Davis was in a white McQueen gown last night featuring an intricately cutout bodice and delicate chiffon skirt. I kept remembering Viola’s sneakers at the Emmys and wondering what kind of shoes she had on, but you couldn’t tell from the length of the dress. Everyone was raving about this gown and while it wasn’t my favorite of her Oscar looks, she did look incredible. I also liked how unique yet classic this was. It had detailing that stood out but wasn’t too busy or distracting. Viola presented Tyler Perry with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award last night. She...
