Following the exciting news that the US state of California is banning sales of fur, comes another great announcement for animals and fashion-forward vegans – retail giants Macy’s and Bloomindale’s have pledged to stop selling fur by the close of 2020.
The compassionate announcement has been made in partnership with Humane Society of the United States, bringing the world closer than ever to the end of fur.
Similarly, in the United Kingdom, Humane Society International UK is campaigning for a UK fur sales ban.
HSI UK hopes that the US news will encourage fashion retail superstores in Britain, like Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Flannels to also go fur-free.

Executive director of HSI UK, Claire Bass, says: “Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s are globally iconic names in fashion retail, so it’s really thrilling to see them following the global trend and ridding their stores of fur.
“By dropping fur, these department stores are making a clear statement that fur is gruesome not glamorous, and we hope that in the United Kingdom Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Flannels will get the memo and ditch cruel fur, too.
“Most consumers agree that caging wild animals their whole lives only to be gassed or electrocuted and skinned for fashion is tasteless and outmoded, so it’s no wonder that we’re seeing some of the biggest names in retail and design are going fur-free.”
Fur-free future?
The parent company of Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s, Mary’s Inc., says it will go fur-free by the end of 2020.
The move will include permanently closing all of its fur vaults and salons – areas of the store dedicated to fur products.
Macy’s is a retail leader in the US — the largest American department store with 900 stores across 44 states.
It is also something of an institution, with a far reach into American hearts and homes.
When a company like this says no to fur, it is a clear sign that the days of this unnecessary commodity are numbered.
Let’s hope that the decision creates a knock-on effect in other brands, stores, states, and countries, and that non-vegans follow suit by refusing to buy and wear fur.
