Hong Kong’s hotels are pushing the boat out this summer with an array of enticing staycations to tempt us – there really is something for everyone! KATE WOODBURY finds out what’s afoot at the city’s Regal Hongkong Hotel.
Location, location, location
For this staycation break, we were looking for a city hotel as a base for a weekend. My husband and I wanted to do some island hiking and our teenage daughter had shopping plans with friends. So we decided on the Regal Hongkong Hotel, right in the heart of Causeway Bay. The hotel is flanked by the iconic circular pedestrian walkway of the area and the Olympic steps, which makes it easy to find.
It’s an ideal location. Causeway Bay’s hustle and bustle is only a few minutes’ away, yet just a 10 minute taxi ride and you can be at the start of Sir Cecil’s Ride at Braemar Hill. So this suited parents and teenager alike!
Rooms at the Regal
The hotel offers a wide selection of room categories to suit couples and families including triple and quadruple rooms. Wallet-friendly options include good-sized deluxe and superior rooms. Some of the rooms are a little dated, but one advantage is that they are more spacious than some of those in the newer hotels. And, if you’re looking for a month’s stay or more, there are some great long-term deals.
However, I’d recommend booking an Executive Club Room. These rooms are furnished in the Regal’s trademark European style; also, being on higher floors, you get to enjoy some fabulous views over Victoria Park and the Harbour.
You’ll also benefit from a dedicated check-in desk (which was handy as reception did get busy during peak hours). We also enjoyed complimentary cocktails and snacks in the Club Lounge overlooking Victoria Park.
Eats, drinks and facilities
Some of the hotel’s outlets are currently closed, so it’s best to check when you book. We had breakfast in Cafe Rivoli, which was a standard buffet; friendly and helpful staff ensured guests were well spaced and socially distanced. And we enjoyed our aforementioned snacks and drinks in the Executive Lounge. But given the location in Causeway Bay, there’s no shortage of choice of restaurants, bars and cafés, all within a few minutes’ walk or a stroll through Victoria Park to Tai Hang.
If you’ve eaten too much, the hotel offers a well-equipped gym to work off the calories. But what caught us by surprise was the rooftop pool and sundeck. There are spectacular views of the harbour from up here, while the south-facing aspect takes in Hong Kong Stadium.
Final word
We would recommend the Regal Hongkong for a great value city staycation. All the staff were friendly and helpful, particularly in the Executive Lounge and we look forward to returning again.
