Some of these places are new to the scene and some are tried and true Freo brekky spots that have kept us well fed and caffeinated for years.
Here are 20 of Fremantle’s best cafes you need to have breakfast at.
Moore & Moore Cafe
Housed in the heritage Moores building on Henry Street, Moore & Moore Cafe serve delicious, feel-good breakfasts with options to suit vegetarians, vegans and anyone who likes to treat their body with loving kindness. We love particularly love the generously served vegan nachos, and the chilli eggs topped with halloumi and chilli harissa.
Duck Duck Bruce
Kermit the frog may have declared it is not easy being green, but we’d have to disagree if you’re shovelling Duck Duck Bruce’s version of smashed avo topped with rubies of pomegranate into your gob. Their “it’s not easy being green” brekky is just one of the many delicious items on their menu that we can’t wait to make our way through. We also drooled over the “beauty and the beet”, with masoor dal hummus, and Sri Lankan sticky beetroot.
Bib & Tucker
If you’ve never been to Bib & Tucker in North Freo, you best get there quick smart for breakfast. Take in the views over Leighton Beach as you enjoy the Shakshuka eggs with flatbread or the banana pancakes. Wash it down with a breakfast martini or a rhubarb and rose spritz and you’ll be good to go.
Mr Chapple
Wake up early and head to Mr Chapple at The Old Synagogue for a freshly-roasted GESHA coffee and breakfast that’s a little bit different to your usual fare—think breakfast dumplings, breakfast tacos, soft shell crab croissants and more.
Little Lefroy’s
If you like to take the reigns when it comes to breakfast, Little Lefroy’s is for you. This cool little cafe in South Freo lets you design your own brekky with add-ons spanning from avocado and slow roasted balsamic tomatoes to smoked salmon and grilled halloumi. If you’d prefer to pick something off the menu, you’ll be equally as happy. We can’t go past the Boston Baked Beans with braised pork, smoked hock and whipped marinated feta.
Ootong & Lincoln
With laid back and retro vibes galore, Ootong & Lincoln serve up some of the best pancakes and waffles in town, topped with berry compote and mascarpone. If you’re not into sweet things for breakfast (what is wrong with you?), there are lots of go-tos including brekkie gnocchi and Turkish eggs.
May Street Larder
Home of the famous Coco Whip and the younger sibling of Bib & Tucker, Perth cafe May Street Larder injected new cool into East Fremantle when it arrived on the dining scene. Offering an epic breakfast menu (think smoked beef brisket hash, apple pie french toast and breakfast burritos), May Street Larder's philosophy centres around seasonal foods and the best produce WA has to offer.
Roasting Warehouse
If you’re all about the bean at breakfast time let the Roasting Warehouse in South Freo wake you up with their freshly roasted brews. Their roaster works around the clock to bring you the best coffee possible. Breakfast-wise, the eggs benny chan is absolutely to die for. These guys used to be called Port City Roasters, but their dine-in cafe has gone back to being known as the iconic Roasting Warehouse.
The Attic
How does apple crumble french toast and breakfast risotto sound for breakfast? Well, that’s exactly what you can get at The Attic in Fremantle. Grab a seat on the upper level or join one of the big communal tables—this place does breakfast right!
Chalky's Espresso Bar
Chalky’s Espresso Bar in Fremantle’s West End sums up what makes our port city so special—heritage buildings, great coffee and some killer people watching. Our picks of the menu have to be The Hock—poached eggs, master stock braised pork hock, potato gratin with house-made hollandaise—and the pancakes with chai apple, salted caramel and coconut yoghurt. Yum.
Canvas Cafe
Tucked away in the leafy-green courtyard of the Fremantle Arts Centre is Canvas Cafe, which is known for its top-notch brews and delicious all-day brunch. The star of the menu at Canvas is their Shakshuka, with two eggs poached in a 16-hour tomato sauce and served with fresh herbs, marinated olives, herbed butter and bread.
Bread In Common
If you’re a fan of eating bread for breakfast, look no further than Bread In Common. It’s no surprise this Fremantle fave is still so popular with its creative menu, stunning warehouse interior, buzzy atmosphere, friendly staff and the best tasting bread ever.
Hush Specialty Coffee
Coffee with a mango and coconut muffin fresh out of the oven anyone? Breakfast is sorted thanks to Hush Specialty Coffee, but there’s more to these guys than just coffee and muffins. The team at hush are also dishing up tasty eats like smashed avo on sourdough, panna cotta granola and french toast—you know what to do.
The Cool Room
From Thursdays to Sundays, The Cool Room in Freo is the place to go for hearty breakfasts and amazing coffee. Think feeds like Moroccan lentil soup with Turkish toast and halloumi bruschetta—whatever you choose will be sure to fill you up. There’s also a vintage store right next store so you can pop in for a browse after you dine.
GESHA Coffee Co.
You’re probably already a fan of GESHA roasted coffee beans, but did you know they have their own cafe too? Their flagship cafe serves up some seriously delicious eats, including waffles with caramelised banana, tofu scramble on toast, eggs benny and plenty more. Of course, that’ll be paired with an outstanding cup of joe.
Turquoise Cafe
Turquoise Cafe in North Freo might be the best value feed of all if you’re in the mood for a bottomless brunch. For just $39 you'll get an all-you-can-eat breakfast, including bacon, eggs, potato rosti benedict, chorizo, mushrooms, roasted cherry tomatoes, avocado and the centrepiece and house-made waffles. Wash it down with free-flowing coffee, tea, cold-pressed juice and fresh OJ, plus, a free bottle of champagne for every two people. Otherwise, their regular breakfast menu is equally drool-worthy, with heaps of our favourite brunch options.
The Bistrot Cafe
The Bistrot Cafe on Marine Terrace is one of the latest additions to Freo’s busy cafe scene. It’s a cross between a European and modern Australian cafe, and you need to come down to try their signature dishes, including smashed avo with chorizo and eggs benedict with salmon and truffle oil.
Bruce Town
North Fremantle’s Bruce Town is one of those cafes that epitomises everything we love about Freo. It’s casual, relaxed, and generally a nice place to be. Notable menu items include the brekky tots (potato gems = perfect hangover cure), and the smashed avo with peas, mint and whipped feta.
Broody Hen
Across the road from the Fremantle Arts Centre and sitting pretty on James Street is the Broody Hen. This bustling little cafe dishes out quick and yummy breakfasts, such as acai bowls, bacon and eggs bagels and avo on toast. This is the perfect neighbourhood cafe to soak up some sun and sip on a coffee while enjoying their outdoor seating area.
Jessie’s At The Beach
Jessie’s is across from Leighton Beach in North Freo, so it’s the ideal place to carb load before you hit the waves. From cabinet snacks to the more substantial fave breakfasts, you can’t really go wrong at this beachside cafe.
